Introduction by SciFi

The Chronological Prince Recordings list had its origin with the publication of the book Dance Music Sex Romance – Prince: The First Decade by Per Nielsen in 1999 which included a list of Prince recording sessions. That formed the basis of this list and from there I started adding additional information from various Uptown releases like Days of Wild and Turn It Up and then it was just a matter of continually updating the list as new information became available.

As Prince released new songs and unreleased songs surfaced on bootlegs, I had great fun placing them in the chronology and when songs were talked about in articles and books like Alex Hahn’s Possessed – The Rise and Fall of Prince from 2004, I always double-checked recording information with my list and updated it whenever appropriate.

10 years later I published the list as it was then on Prince.org and corrections were made with input from orgers like databank and brainchild. Here’s what the readers said:

“Thanx for the acknowledgment SciFi. We put a lot of work into those books and it is great to see that people still use them as a reference. Keep up the work and keep the torch lit!”
- madhouseman

“Unbelievable is the word. That impressive list is hard to comprehend. You should write a Prince info-book, Scififilmnerd.”
- The Dance

“Very impressive and very well organised. Thanks, and keep up that good work.!”
- SmearMrTroof

“Wow, fantastic! This is very helpful. Thank you.”
- Sweeting

“Great. Gonna save this to a doc. file. Thanks.”
- Dewrede

As the years passed by since then, new information kept popping up like when Matt Thorne published his Prince Updated Edition in 2013 and Duane Tudahl published his Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983 and 1984 Expanded Edition in 2018. The Prince Estate releases of Deluxe Editions of Prince albums with previously unreleased tracks from the Vault and accompanying liner notes have also been very helpful.

And of course, Princevault.com has been a very valuable resource.

Following the launch of The Chronological Prince Recordings Index blog on 5 November 2020, databank has once again been very helpful with corrections, as has lurker316. THE ARTIST has been very helpful in particular. And I also got a partner! I was contacted by TheSilentMikey who had been making his own alphabetical list of Prince recordings and offered to supply me with his information for integration into my blog. Of course, I accepted even though updating my Prince Index with his information was a lot of work. But it was worth it to present the most accurate picture of Prince’s recording history.

The Chronological Prince Recordings Index has now been completely updated and re-arranged based on the information supplied by TheSilentMikey as well as being proofread by Mr.Z and I can only recommend copying the Chronological Prince Recordings list to Word. Its search function is very helpful in quickly locating specific tracks and skipping back and forth between all the variant versions thereof.

The Chronological Prince Recordings Index is a work in progress. New information continually appears. Whenever I change or add something to the Index I will add a comment about it at the end of each list. Comments are deleted after a few months.

Now, have fun and enjoy!
